What are the main benefits of cedar shakes or shingles?  Even more than you might think:

• Cedar shingles and shakes can last longer than many asphalt roofs can, if properly maintained.  There’s not much you need to do, though, other than get a quick oil treatment every few years.  If you do that, your cedar roof can easily last longer than the 20-or-so years before the typical asphalt roof starts circling the drain.
• They’re more energy-efficient.  Not only does wood have higher R-value than asphalt, but it also reflects more sunlight than most asphalt shingles will.
• They’re better on Mother Earth.  Asphalt shingles are made out of crude oil that goes from a rig to a tanker to a refinery to a factory, protects your home for maybe 20 years, and then sits in a landfill until Judgment Day.  At the end of cedar’s very long lifespan, you could conceivably turn it into mulch.
• They don’t lose granules.  An asphalt roof loses granules and slowly weakens over the years.
• They may match your sidewall better than other roofing options can.
• They look great, whether they’re brand-new or have graced your roof for many years.
• You can always get more cedar.  There’s no chance that the product gets discontinued.
