FixRoof: A Childhood Memory That Built a Brand

The Day at the Old Barn

I was only eight years old, trailing behind my dad after school as he headed to another roofing job. The site was a small farm, and we found ourselves at the backside of an old cow barn on a warm afternoon. Dad climbed up an aged wooden ladder leaning against the barn, tools rattling at his belt, ready to lay shingles on the worn roof.

I stayed below, kicking at the dust, gazing up at him.

The scent of sun-baked hay mixed with tar filled the air – a smell that even now, decades later, brings this day rushing back to me. It was the kind of childhood afternoon that etches itself into your heart without you even knowing it.

Fear on the Ladder

From high above, Dad called down, “Bring me some shingles!” Without hesitation, I gathered a bundle of shingles in my skinny arms. I placed a foot on the first rung of that rickety ladder and began to climb. At first it felt like an adventure – helping Dad, being his little helper. But as I got about halfway up, I made the mistake of looking down. The ground suddenly seemed impossibly far away. My stomach dropped and my heart pounded in my ears. Fear took hold of me on that ladder rung – a fear so strong that my hands trembled against the rails. I froze, clinging tightly, and then instinctively started to climb back down to safety.

“What are you doing?” my father’s voice boomed from above. I can still hear the concern and firmness in his tone. I mumbled shakily, “It’s too high. I’m scared… I want to get down.” For a moment, there was silence except for the rustle of the barnyard grass and an old cow mooing in the distance. I will never forget what Dad yelled next – words that would become a guiding light in my life.

“Fear Is Just a Feeling.”

Dad’s voice was calm but unwavering as he spoke: “Fear is just a feeling, and you’re going to feel like this sometimes. You have to learn to push through it.” He paused, letting that sink in, then added with gentle encouragement mixed with a challenge, “Now get up here and help me fix this roof.” His words hung in the air. He wasn’t scolding me for being afraid; he was teaching me. In that moment, on that swaying wooden ladder, I understood that my father believed in me – he believed I could overcome this fear.

With a deep breath, I tightened my grip on the shingles and resumed climbing. Each rung felt a little steadier under my feet as his words echoed in my mind. Finally, I reached the top of the ladder. Dad’s weathered hand gripped my arm and helped me onto the roof beside him. I was shaky, but I was up there standing on the roof with my dad, looking out over the farm fields. The fear that had loomed so large just moments before started to fade, replaced by a swell of pride. I had faced my fear and pushed through it, just like he said. My dad gave me a gruff nod and the hint of a proud smile. Together, on that old barn roof in the golden afternoon light, we got to work hammering down shingles, one by one. In silence, without another word needed, I learned that courage isn’t about not feeling afraid – it’s about not letting fear stop you.

The Birth of FixRoof

One of those retellings sparked an idea that would become the heart of my brand. I was reminiscing with a friend about how I essentially grew up on rooftops, learning the trade from Dad, when I recounted his exact words: “Now get up here and help me fix this roof.” The phrase hung in my mind like a banner. In that moment, it all clicked – my life’s work and that defining memory merged into one concept. FixRoof was born right then and there.

I decided to build my company around the values of that childhood lesson. The very next day, I secured a phone number that spelled out FIX-ROOF, and I registered the domain FixRoof.com. I wanted every aspect of the business to honor that memory. The name itself is a daily reminder of Dad’s call to action on that ladder. But beyond the name, the mission of FixRoof became clear: just as my father helped me conquer my fear and get the job done, our company would help homeowners conquer the worries of a damaged roof and get their problems solved with courage and trust.

Built on Family, Courage, and Pride

Today, FixRoof stands for more than just repairing shingles or stopping leaks – it stands for the family values and courage that shaped its founder. Every time our team drives out to a customer’s home, I see a bit of that eight-year-old me, anxious about the task ahead but ready to do it because someone believes in them. We make it a point to treat our customers like family, with honesty and patience, the way my dad taught me on that barn roof. And when we say, “we’ll fix your roof,” there’s a deeper promise in those words – a promise that we’ll be there to help, no matter how daunting the climb or tough the job, just as my father was there for me.

I often find myself gazing up at a roof we’ve just finished repairing, remembering a smaller barn and a younger me. I feel the same mix of relief and accomplishment I did back then, and I imagine Dad standing beside me, nodding in approval. Pride swells in my chest knowing that I’ve carried his lesson forward. Our logo, our name, every nail we drive – it all carries the imprint of that day and that simple, powerful lesson about overcoming fear.

Many people have childhood memories of holding a flashlight for their mom or passing tools to their dad. My memory just happened to take place on a rooftop, with my dad handing down not only tools and tasks, but wisdom. FixRoof’s story is really my dad’s story, and mine – a father and son on an old barn, turning a moment of fear into a lifetime of purpose. It’s a story told without a single word wasted, a story that lives in the heart of our company.

And so, every time someone sees the name FixRoof, I hope they feel a little of what I feel: the warmth of a nostalgic childhood memory and the inspiring spark of a lesson learned. It’s a reminder that behind every roof we fix, there’s a foundation of love, courage, and the pride of overcoming what scares us. That’s the FixRoof promise, born from an eight-year-old boy on a ladder and a dad who knew a simple truth – that fear is just a feeling, and with a little faith and a steady hand, any roof (and any fear) can be fixed.
